Youth-Focused Community Resource

Youth & Funerals: Understanding the important role funerals and memorialization play in the lives of youth

Through the generous support of our donors, the Funeral Service Foundation created a booklet, ebook and video in collaboration with NFDA, funeral service professionals and bereavement experts committed to helping families and caregivers understand the important role funerals and memorization play in the lives of youth.

Conveying the important role funerals and memorialization play in the lives of both adults and children, and dispelling common myths that prevent children from attending or participating in funerals can be challenging.

We offer these resources to help you create meaningful and healing memorialization experiences for the families and communities you serve.

These tools help debunk the common myths that prevent youth from attending or participating in funerals, offer age-appropriate language and advice on discussing death and funerals with youth, and give suggestions for youth preparedness, empowerment and involvement in memorialization.

Watch the Youth & Funerals Video

The Funeral Service Foundation created this video in collaboration with funeral service professionals and grief and bereavement experts committed to helping families and caregivers understand the role funerals and memorialization play in the lives of youth.

Self-Care Handbook

Caring for Families & Caring for Yourself: Self Care Resources for Funeral Service Professionals

The tips, guidance, quizzes and journaling prompts in this free handbook help funeral service professionals manage stress, learn the importance of self-care and uncover a deep sense of self-understanding.

The Funeral Service Foundation commissioned the handbook and complementing poster through the COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund. Both resources are available to funeral service professionals.

Funeral service professionals are first responders – sometimes called “last responders” in a high-touch, high-stress environment. Effectively managing that stress is part and parcel of the vocation and essential to a funeral service professional’s well-being. Finding ways to manage stress is key to maintaining healthy relationships with loved ones, and boosts a funeral director’s capacity to compassionately serve families.

Use this handbook to explore effective self-care techniques, specially designed to help funeral service professionals maintain a healthy work/life balance and prevent burnout.

The handbook features tips, guidance, quizzes and journaling prompts that use proven methods to help funeral service professionals:

  • Evaluate experiences, thoughts, and feelings
  • Manage stress
  • Navigate a path to self-care
  • Uncover a deeper sense of self-understanding

Self-Care Manifesto Poster

Use this poster in your work room for a gentle, helpful, and constant reminder of the self-care manifesto featured in the handbook. Read through each point to stay connected with your thoughts, feelings, and self-care goals to maintain a healthy work/life balance and to be the best funeral service professional you can be.

COVID-19-Focused Grief Resource

Grieving Alone & Together: Responding to the loss of your loved one during the COVID-19 pandemic

The Funeral Service Foundation funded this guide through the COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund, and created it in collaboration with the National Funeral Directors Association and RememberingALife.com.

The guide addresses the challenges of grieving a loved one’s death during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the nature of grief; traumatic loss and its triggers; ambiguous losses; and the risk of disenfranchised grief. It also addresses the importance of talking to children about death and memorialization and the difficulties of being separated from a loved one at the time of their death. The guide offers guidance on how families can meaningfully celebrate the life of their loved one and discusses the importance of maintaining your health while grieving.
